(Athens, GA) — Heard High School junior Cole Holliday was one of the top finishers at the annual Future Farmer’s of America Lawn Mower Competition held last month at the University of Georgia.

Holliday finished in 12th place at the statewide competition featuring students from all six high school classifications competing against one another.

The three-part event features a written exam, problem solving exam, and an actual operation exercise where students maneuver the lawnmower through a difficult obstacle course.

“During the driving part of the competition, you drive on the obstacle course that is set up where you use every part of lawnmower — such as the parking brake, reverse turning right/left and also cutting close to objects as you mow,” said Holliday. “You don’t actually engage blades though for safety purposes during competition.”

Cole scored 73.56 to earn his way into the rankings at the event which was open to all 37,300 Georgia FFA members. He finished in second place at the sub-area meet in Bleckley County to earn the trip to state.

Cole’s FFA advisor is Mr. Dale McWhorter.

Cole traveled a lot during the month of March as he also placed fifth in an area extemporaneous speaking competition.
