Historical Run in Macon

(Macon, GA) — Junior HHS wrestler Matt Brown etched his name into Heard County sports history over the weekend finishing as the state runner-up in the 220-pound weight class at the GHSA Class AA Traditional State Wrestling Championships.

The biggest event of the Georgia High School Sports season took place in front of an estimated 8,000 people at the Centreplex in Macon.

His finish is the best in school and county history and he just narrowly missed winning the title outright during a grueling finals match with senior Carson Rich from the Lovett school and Region 6-AA.

Brown held a point lead after each of the first two periods before Rich got the pin early in the third period.

Interestingly, Brown broke his own coach’s school record as Coach Kyle Yates attained the deepest finish at the state meet after finishing fourth in the heavyweight division of Class AA as a senior in 2008.

Brown has now catapulted himself to the top in two sports as he was also an all-state selection in football season this season as well as the Region 5-AA Defensive Player of the Year.

Of the eight quarter finalists at this year’s meet, six were seniors so Brown will be one of the heavy favorites at the state meet in 2016.
