(Franklin, GA) — Members of the James Stewart Chapter, NSDAR, visited Thomas Lipford on Friday, June 15th, to celebrate his recent 99th birthday.

With family members present, Mr. Lipford was presented with an American flag flown over the United States Capitol building in honor of his birthday on May 30, 2018.

Accompanying the flag was a special certificate.

It stated, “This flag was flown at the request of the Honorable A. Drew Ferguson, IV, Member of Congress, in honor of Mr. Thomas Lipford on his 99th birthday and his service to the United States of America.”

Thomas Lipford served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

During the visit, he related several stories about his service to our country in the Pacific theatre of the war. He shared a moving account about his flight over Hiroshima before the bombing and the devastation he witnessed on the return flight.

The flag was folded the evening before by members of the American Legion Post 148, Durell Langley and Charlie Frost. This flag now rests in a display box on the mantel in the Lipford home.
