Husband of HCHS graduate shot while vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands

(Smith’s Station, AL) — The husband of a Heard High graduate, Kevin Newman, is facing a severe medical emergency after he was shot and robbed while on vacation with his family in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Newman’s wife, Tiffany Newman (formerly Tiffany Milam) is a 1995 graduate of HCHS.

Kevin Newman’s nephew, Michael McEachern, described the circumstances leading up to the shooting in an interview with WRBL-TV Columbus last night.

“He went to go look for his son and his son came back to the room and from there Gavin came back and went to sleep and next thing you know security was knocking on the door saying that Kevin was shot,” said McEachern.

McEachern says doctors operated on his uncle initially, but the hospital was not equipped to meet his needs, and that’s why the community joined together and created a Go Fund Me page to help Newman get a medical flight back to the United States.

In less than 24 hours, the Go Fund Me effort has raised over $21,000 and includes several donations from Tiffany’s local friends and classmates here in Heard County.

Now the family is hoping the community will not only continue to donate, but say a prayer for Kevin.

“I want to thank everybody in the community for being there for Kevin and helping out as much as you can, thank-you for all the prayers, thank-you for even helping out to get him back over here,” added McEachern.

The fundraising effort’s initial goal of $15,000 for a medical flight back to the states was reached within a couple of hours and Kevin was flown back to Fort Lauderdale, FL late Friday.

The family hopes he can be transferred to Emory in Atlanta to be close to family during his long recovery.

The creator of the page posted an update early Saturday morning thanking those who came to Kevin’s emergency aid by donating so quickly.

“There are not enough words to express the gratitude this family has for all the love, prayers and generosity that has been extended to them,” said April Brown Herring. “Please know that all the funds raised going forward will be used for Kevin’s extensive medical expenses that will be incurred. Thank you again so much and please continue to keep this family covered in prayers!”

The Turks and Caicos Islands lie southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas island chain and north of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and the other Antillesarchipelago islands. The islands are known primarily for tourism and as an offshore financial centre.
