‘Huzzie Factor’ in full effect as Braves topple Red Jackets

(Franklin, GA) — The Braves returned to Staples Stadium Friday night where they bounced back with a 41-20 Homecoming win over the Jordan Red Jackets to move to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 in Region 5-AA play.

The final score was not indicative of the rout as the Braves led 33-6 at the half and the Jackets scored their final TD against the Braves JV defense as time expired in the game.

Sophomore Alijah Huzzie got his first start under center in the place of injured signal caller Emory Jones. Jones was dressed out for the game but did not play as his shoulder continues to heal.

Huzzie had a nice night completing 10 of his 13 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. He added a third TD on the ground before giving way to third string QB Trey Alford late in the game.

Senior DayVinTroy led the ground attack with 44 yards rushing and two TD’s on just nine touches. Coach Barron was able to get a lot of younger players in the game as ten different Braves had rushing yards.

Senior Ethan Brant and junior Jaden Moreland were on the receiving end of the Huzzie TD passes. Sophomore Andrew Leak had a 4-yard TD run.

The young offensive line consisting of sophomores Jaidan Cameron, Michael Cheney, David Urquilla, Brenden Thompson along with junior Mason Jenkins continued to gel and seem to be improving each week as the Braves head towards the most important games of the season.

The Brave defense was led by Peyton Ehlers, Mike Holmes, Jonta Gray, Moreland, Brant, Kezmann Kelley, and Luis Vazquez. Vazquez had a nice fumble recovery late in the third quarter. The defense had a nice goal line stand to end the first half.

In other Region 5-AA action Friday night, Spencer pitched a 39-0 shutout at Lamar County, and Callaway defeated Temple 35-10.

The last two weeks will be crucial to the final region standings and state playoff seedings as the top four teams battle with one another often.

The Braves will host Lamar County this Friday night for senior night and then travel to Spencer on November 5 for a special 2:00 Saturday afternoon kickoff to close out the regular season.

Spencer travels to Callaway this Friday night with both teams currently unbeaten in region play.

The Braves need to win the final two games and in the process would earn the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game in the first round at state.

Region 5-AA will battle Region 7-AA in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs on November 11. Five teams are currently vying for the 7-AA playoff slots including Pepperell, Rockmart, Chattooga, Model, and Coosa.
