#HuzzieFactor drops 33 in big Brave road win

(Barnesville, GA) — The Braves improved to 3-1 in the Region 5-AA standings Friday night with a crucial 56-50 road win at Lamar County.

Junior Brave Alijah Huzzie poured in 33 points to lead the Braves — his second big scoring effort in the last week.

Huzzie scored 37 in a loss at Jordan a week ago in Columbus and also led the way in Tuesday’s home win over Temple. Only 12 of Huzzie’s 33 Friday came via the 3-point basket.

Other top scorers in the win over the Trojans last night were Darius Matthews with nine and Tray Dunson with six.

Coach Keith Simmons had to utilize his bench after a couple of early injuries and got some important quality minutes late in the game from Jacorian Allen.

The Braves (4-12, 3-1) are sitting alone in second place in Region 5-AA but hope to improve that position Tuesday night when they host the current top team, the Spencer Greenwave from Columbus.

The Greenwave (12-4, 3-0) have been dominant versus their first three region opponents winning contests versus Temple, Jordan, and Lamar by an average margin of 31+ points.

The Braves have improved after a slow start where several key players were out of action during the final four playoff run in football.

“We have definitely improved a lot since the beginning of the season but we will need to be ready for this Spencer group coming in here Tuesday night,” says Coach Simmons. “They are by far the deepest and most polished team in our region and if we let them play the kind of fast-paced unorganized game they want to we will struggle. The key for us will be playing a slower, more methodical pace.”

Temple sits in third place at 2-2 in region play with Callaway in fourth at 1-2. Every region game will be huge for all four teams with seedings a high priority in the first round of the state playoffs as Region 5-AA matches up with the very competitive Region 6-AA in the first round.

The top boys seed after the regular season will also host the Region 5-AA tournament so a lot will be on the line as the Braves and Greenwave take the court this Tuesday night in Franklin.

The Lady Braves (5-12, 2-2) fell to the Trojans 61-39 Friday night and are presently holding on to fourth place with six region games left to play.

Lamar County, Spencer, and Callaway are each sitting at 3-1 in region play to hold the top three region seeds at the moment. A win over Spencer Tuesday night would be an important one for Coach Helen Akins and her young, rebuilding squad.
