Irma Hyatt Shelnutt receives Women in American History Medal

(Centralhatchee, GA) — The James Stewart Chapter, NSDAR, presented the Women in American History Award to Irma Hyatt Shelnutt at her 90th birthday party held Saturday, April 6th, at Centralhatchee Elementary School.

Surrounded by her family, friends and past students, Ms. Shelnutt was recognized for her achievements and contributions to the people of Heard County.

The Women in American History Award is given to notable women that have made an outstanding contribution and difference in the community.

Ms. Shelnutt has proven throughout her life to be an educational, social and cultural innovator.

Her contributions to Heard County are too numerous to list in this article but it can be said that she has made a lasting impact on her past students in her 33 years of being a teacher and principal in the county.

Many of her former students shared that they were thankful for her guidance and the morals she instilled in all her students.

The motto of the NSDAR is “God, Home and Country.”
