(Franklin) — The James Stewart Chapter NSDAR was pleased to be able to honor five Heard County students this May.

The chapter presented its first $100 DAR Good Citizen Contest Winner scholarship to our Class of 2016 DAR Good Citizen Brian Hill at the Heard County High School Awards Program on Tuesday May 3rd.

As the 2016 DAR Good Citizen, Brian chose to enter this year’s Good Citizen scholarship contest and placed first for Heard County.

The James Stewart Chapter honored eighth grade student and three fifth grade students with the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal.

Awarding this medal is a wonderful way for us to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools and communities.

The student selected for the school’s DAR Youth Citizenship Medal must display the following qualities: HONOR ( honesty, high principles, trustworthiness, loyalty, truthfulness, punctuality, moral strength and stability, cleanliness in mind and body); SERVICE (cooperation, meritorious behavior bringing honor to school or community, kindliness, unselfishness, true Americanism, individual responsibility to God, Home, and Country); COURAGE (mental and physical determination to overcome obstacles); LEADERSHIP (personality, originality, ability to lead others, good sportsmanship, responsibility); and PATRIOTISM (fundamental Americanism).

The winning students were selected by their teachers as the student who best exemplifies these qualities in their respective grades.

Members of the James Stewart Chapter attended the Heard County Middle School Awards Program on the 9th of May and presented the 8th grade DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to Miss Mary Christian Herndon.

On Tuesday May 17th, members attended the Awards night at Centralhatchee Elementary and presented a 5th grade DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to Mr. Clayton Rose.

On Friday May 20th, members attended the Awards Program at Ephesus Elementary and presented a 5th grade DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to Miss Allison Duncan and the Awards Program at Heard County Elementary to present a 5th grade DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to Miss Camy Hannah.

There is no better service that members of the DAR can do than that of recognizing good citizenship in our young people.

The James Stewart Chapter DAR applauds these students and the support groups that stand behind them.
