The James Stewart Chapter of the DAR welcomed new member Nancy Hill at their meeting on September 8th.  Nancy’s application was approved by the National Society in July.

Nancy is pleased to have found a Revolutionary patriot on her birth-mother’s side of the family. Nancy was adopted as an infant by two loving parents.  She was an only child and was raised in Texas.

At the age of 21, she enlisted in the US Navy since it had been a dream of hers from the time she was very young.  She was a Data Systems Technician in the Navy for six years and lived in Italy for three of those years.

When asked about that time, she said “It was quite an experience traveling and living in Europe. It gave me a whole new respect for the USA and how much better our way of life differs from the other free countries there. This experience also gave me a stronger respect for our patriots and what they all came here for.”

After her time in the service, Nancy went back to Texas and eventually won a job with AT&T.  This job led her to Atlanta and eventually to the James Stewart Chapter through her co-worker Beverly Baker.

In 1992, she met her birth mother!  Nancy got the chance to know her and remained in contact with her for over 16 years. They had many long conversations and became friends. Nancy went from being an only child to having three sisters and one brother.

Nancy defines herself as a “patriotic at heart”, and when the opportunity came to join the NS-DAR she didn’t hesitate.  With the help and encouragement of Beverly Baker, James Stewart Regent and Nancy’s coworker at AT&T, she found a Patriot on her birth mother’s side of the family.

Since then she has found several others.  When asked about this experience, Nancy said “With these roots I am finding I am better able to understand my fierce patriotic feelings I have had my whole life. It is so exciting and it is difficult to express just how special this is to me. “

In the months that Nancy has been attending James Stewart Chapter meetings, while working on her application and gathering her proof documents required by the National Society, members have come to know her and we welcome her to our chapter and applaud her approval.
