Jasmine Cook Scores 24 as Lady Braves Drop Lions

The Lady Braves continued a solid start to the season Tuesday night at the high school by defeating the Central Lions.

The Braves had to overcome a barrage of 3-point baskets by the Lion’s Julia Gilley in the first half. Gilley had four baskets from outside the arc and led the Lions with 16 points.

Jasmine Cook led the way for the Braves with 24 points and she is now averaging 19 points per game on the young season.

The Braves controlled the game for much of the first half leading after one quarter 22-11 and at the half 33-24.

Central came out of the locker room in the third quarter and went on a 16-4 run to overtake the lead.

In the end, however, good foul shooting by the Braves was the difference as they got the win 58-50.

Jemeka Parks also continued to spark the team. She had 21 points.

Other great news for Coach Valerie Williams was the return to the line-up of Junior stand-out Reece Walker who had been sidelined with an arm injury suffered during a football cheering stunt.[gpslideshow]

The boys team continued to struggle losing 62-39 but did show much improvement over the opener.

The highlight of the game was a late first quarter dunk by Sophomore Jonathan Hunt. It was his first varsity dunk and the crowd went nuts.

Freshman Duranta Dunson led the way in scoring with 14 followed by Damon Pearson who finished with 8.

The JV boys were also upended by the Lions 53-28. Corey Chapman, Brent Callahan, and C.J. Bradfield led the way with 5 points each followed by Levi Brown and Elijah Toney who each had 4.

The Braves teams all return to action this Saturday night once again versus the Lions, but this time the games will take place at Central High School in Carrollton.
