(Albany, GA) — Jemeka Parks brought home three medals from this weekend’s GHSA-AA State Track Finals in Albany including two strong third place finishes in the long jump and the 100 meter hurdles. She also scored an eighth place spot on the winner’s podium on the high jump.

A total of four Lady Braves headed to Albany including senior stand-out in the field events, Jasmine Cook. Cook threw the shot put 38-feet-2-inches to become state runner-up, but was unable to overcome an awesome throw by state champion LaPorsha Wells from Josey High School.

Cook and Wells both seemed drained during the Discuss Throw which immediately followed the Shot Put event. Cook did manage to medal, however, with an eighth place finish.

Shemeka Parks also nabbed a sixth pace medal in her only event, the difficult triple jump (35-feet-8-inches).

Young sophomore pole vaulter, Caitlin Newell, did not place but appears poised to make another run at state next season. Sarah Zimmerman of region 5-AA foe Bremen launched herself over the pole at 11 feet for the AA Championship.

As a team, the Lady Braves finished in seventh place in the state with 25 points, only three points away from the top five. Westminster placed first with 72 points.

Coach Chuck Tatom was pleased by the girl’s performances. “The girls did real well. Our Senior Jasmine did a good job leading us out and all of our girls did well all the way down to our young sophomore Newell. Jemeka Parks is a workhorse, she is an athlete to be sure,” said Tatom after the meet.

With the exception of Jemeka Parks, all of the other girl’s events wrapped up on Thursday. Parks headed back to compete in the 100 meter hurdle finals on Saturday.

Other than Parks, only Alicia Ware (2008, 2009) and Arthez Woodruff (1982) have finished with two top four medals at the state meet.
