(Franklin) – In 2002, a time when the overall perception of the Heard County athletics programs was not very high, former Principal Mr. Richard Carlisle named Joel Rogers as the new Athletic Director. Joel would serve in that capacity from 2002 until 2013. What occurred during his tenure was nothing less than incredible.
As a graduate of Heard County High School in 1968, Joel was more than a teacher and athletic director. Joel’s passion to see our schools and our community succeed went further than that of the average teacher. His love for his community helped guide and motivate him throughout his years as a faculty member in our system.
Not only was Joel a member of the faculty, he was a valued member of the community. This love for the community of Heard County guided him in preparing young men and women to be successful citizens.

Throughout his years as the Athletic Director, our community witnessed the changing of the entire face of Heard County High School and the entire athletics program.
With new facilities for football, softball, track, wrestling, baseball, and basketball, the expectations of our athletics programs expanded. Our athletes would no longer have to compete on less than comparable fields and courts. Our players now had something to take pride in.
Heard County went from having one of the poorest athletic facilities in the area to one of the top facilities in the state. It was this sense of pride that began changing the mind set of our young athletes. With this new sense of appreciation, our athletes began dreaming bigger and expecting more from themselves.
As others began taking notice of the changes taking place in Heard County, Joel would be recognized in the area as an athletic director worthy of awards. In 2008, Joel was honored as the 2008 Athletic Director of the Year for Region 5-AA. As word of the great changes taking place at Heard County spread beyond our area, Joel began being recognized at the state level as well.
In 2011, Joel was once again named Athletic Director of the Year for region 5-AA. With this award, Joel was nominated as the AA State Athletic Director of the Year for the State of Georgia. When the state had an opportunity to look back over the changes and accomplishments of our athletic program under the direction of Joel Rogers, it was an easy decision to name Joel Rogers as the 2011 AA State Athletic Director of the Year.
At this time, we would like to thank Joel Rogers for his many years serving the students and the community of Heard County.
