Jones’ grand slam sparks Braves to 12-2 win

(Barnesville, GA) — A grand slam from Brave senior Bryan Jones in the top of the third inning helped propel the Braves (4-9, 1-0) to a big 12-2 win at Lamar County Tuesday afternoon in the first Region 5-AA contest of the season.

The homer to right field plated Dale Thornhill, Hanley McCosh, and Davey Raines to give Coach Trent Bianco’s squad a 5-2 lead over the Trojans (8-5, 1-3) and they would never look back.

Jones had a big day all around at the plate going 3-for-5 with the homer, a double, and five RBI’s.

Junior catcher Will Hammett also had a big day going 5-for-5 with a double and two batted in.

Other top hitters included Collin Wright (3-for-5) and Caden Raines (2-for-6, one run, one RBI).

Starting pitcher Tray Owens earned the win with another quality outing.

Owens tossed four plus innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.

The win was his third in his last four starts and he appears to have cemented his role as the No. 1 starter moving into region play.

Senior A.J. Head was solid in relief allowing just a single hit and striking out two in two innings of relief on his birthday. Freshman Drew Cornelius pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close it out.

The Brave bats appear to be getting hot at just the right time of the season with five starters now hitting above .300.

Caden Raines leads the way at .385 followed by Jones (.357), Davey Raines (.348), Hammett (.344), and Tanner Collins at an even .300. Jones leads the squad with 16 RBI’s followed by Collins with 10.

The Braves will return home Friday to host the Trojans in the series finale doubleheader with a game one first pitch slated for 4:30 PM.

The Braves got another 11-1 home win over Eagles Landing Christian Academy last Thursday in an added game.

Owens led the way at the plate with a homer and three RBI’s. Caden Raines added three RBI’s while Jones and Thornhill each drove home two. Jones got the start and the win in that game tossing five solid innings and allowing just one earned run.

The Braves dropped a 14-8 contest to Brookstone over the weekend at Alford Field. Jones homered in that game as well and drove home two while Tanner Collins had a big day offensively with two hits including a double and three RBI’s. Six different Brave pitchers saw action in the final tune-up for region.
