Junior Varsity Braves Win 36-34 Barn Burner Over Red Devils

Zack Stephens (#1) recovers the onside kick to secure the win for the Braves

The junior varsity Braves seemed to be in full control of the Bowdon Red Devils in the season opener tonight at Staples Stadium late in the game.

They led the Devils 28-12 with under six minutes to go in the game until a fierce frenzy of  scoring by both teams turned the game into a shoot-out.

The Braves were in control of the game for the first three and a half quarters relying primarily on three touchdown passes by Sophomore quarterback Taylor Smith including one very nice grab by recent transfer from Handley High School Damon Pearson.

The Braves also got solid first half contributions from Tae Freeland and Tori Rogers. As mentioned the game turned extremely exciting late in the fourth quarter as the Devils rushed for a short touchdown with 5:44 to play and after a successful two-point conversion trailed the Braves 28-20.

The Devils then capitalized on a Braves fumble on the next drive and took possession in Heard County territory with under four minutes to play. On a third and goal from the 11 yard line the Devils connected for a touchdown pass and yet another two point conversion to stun the Braves fans and suddenly the game was all even at 28-28 with only 2:03 to play in the game.

The Devils ensuing kickoff went out-of-bounds and after a five yard penalty were forced to kick again. The crowd did not stay silent long, however, as Freeland took the kickoff and strolled 84 yards for the go ahead touchdown as the home crowd erupted.

Smith converted the two point play and the Braves had quickly regained the lead with less than two minutes to play.

Still not out of it the Devils marched quickly back down the field on its next offensive drive and scored another touchdown to bring the score to 36-34 with just 33 seconds showing on the clock.

After time-outs by both teams, all the pressure was on the Braves defense as the Devils went for the conversion and they indeed stepped up to make a tackle at the one yard line to maintain the two point lead.

The Red Devils then had a good chance at an onside kick recovery but alas it was covered by freshman Zack Stephens to seal the exciting 36-34 victory for the home Junior Varsity  squad.

After the game, Coach D.J. Curbow credited his guys for battling hard all four quarters despite some big mistakes. He said that despite all the exciting plays in the game that it all boiled down to just one play where his defense came up with a big stop on the final Red Devil two-point conversion.

The team is open next week before traveling to Callaway to take on the Cavaliers  Thursday September 15th at 5:30 p.m.
