Kids Exhibit Takes a Hands-on Approach to Health

(Franklin) — As a part of a new summer health campaign, Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is bringing its interactive Kids Exhibit to the Heard County Library.

Get Healthy, Live Well kicked off its #SummerOfHealth campaign earlier this month and is organizing fun, family-friendly activities that encourage community members to lead healthy lifestyles all summer long.

The Kids Exhibit is an interactive traveling exhibit that teaches kids ages 6 to 12 about healthy lifestyles in a fun and exciting way. The exhibit will be at the Heard County Library on June 2 from 2 to 3 p.m.

“Rather than having kids stay at home playing video games or watching TV all day, we are encouraging families to get outside and explore what the community has to offer,” said Patricia Mitchell, wellness and prevention coordinator, at Get Healthy, Live Well.

The Kids Exhibit features nine educational stations, each designed to keep kids engaged and excited about learning to make healthy choices.

Among the exhibit’s highlights is the anti-tobacco station, which features real pig lungs — one that is healthy and another that was simulated to show what smoking does to a lung.

At one of the nutrition stations, kids learn how to create a balanced plate of food and what it takes to burn a certain amount of calories.

By illustrating how much sugar is in beverages such as juices and sodas, the “Rethink Your Drink” station will cause kids to rethink the drinks they choose.

Kids can try out balance boards, test their flexibility or challenge themselves to do sit-ups and push-ups at the stations that focus on fitness. They also get to jump rope and then observe their bodies’ reactions, from feeling winded to sweating.

After visiting each station, kids walk away with a better understanding of what it takes to get and stay healthy. The Kids Exhibit can be scheduled to appear at libraries and schools in west Georgia.

Parents are encouraged to share photos of their kids having a great time at the exhibit by posting on social media with the hashtag #SummerOfHealth.

Get Healthy, Live Well will also make an appearance at the Neva Lomason Memorial Library in Carrollton on June 4 as part of a summer reading series kickoff event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
