Lady Braves blast Blue Devils

After a disappointing Region 5-AA opening loss to Bowdon last week, the Lady Braves (11-3, 0-1) needed a lift when they battled one of the top teams in the state at home Tuesday.

The Bremen Lady Blue Devils (10-1,2-0), ranked #8 in the state by the coaches, provided a formidable challenge to the local ladies who had just dropped to #4 in the rankings after last week’s three losses.

The Blue Devils came into the match-up on a 10-game winning streak and a with lot of momentum but this game would belong to the Lady Braves.

After just five innings, the Lady Braves walked away with a 9-0 victory.

Freshman Jordan Watson scattered seven hits over the five innings to get the win.

Offensively, the Lady Braves were led by several different players.

Freshman Alexis Raines was 3-3 with a double, Cali Harrod went 2-3 with a double and two RBI’s, and Anna Shelnutt was 2-3 with two doubles and one RBI.

Shea Person continued to swing a hot bat also adding two RBI’s. Coach Matt Hornsby was also very pleased by the girls performance defensively.

“Cali Harrod (SS) and Anna Shelnutt (3B) have really been important to our defense this year. In girls softball most of the balls are hit to the left side of the infield and they both have been outstanding with the gloves,” said Hornsby.

The win was also über important because of the region seedings. Although the region tournament will determine the state playoff seeds, having the home field advantage in that region tournament is critical.

The girls will travel to Spencer on Thursday (5:30) for another region 5-AA game.
