The Region 5-AA Softball Championship Tournament was held Saturday at the high school, and for the second consecutive year the Lady Braves came out with the big trophy.

The top four teams in the Region, the Braves, Callaway, Manchester, and Temple competed in the all day single elimination tournament that would decide the seedings for this week’s first round of the GHSA State Playoffs.

In the first game of the day, Callaway defeated Manchester 10-2 to earn a spot in the championship game.

In game two, the Lady Braves held only a slim 2-0 lead over Temple in the 5th inning when Candace Ray came through with a huge double to drive home two runs and the Braves won 5-1 to also advance to the championship game.

In game three, Manchester knocked off Temple 7-0 to secure the number three seed in the region.

A large crowd packed into the stadium Saturday evening for the championship game as the Braves took on Callaway for the Region Crown for the second consecutive season.

Senior Alicia Carroll took the mound with all the pressure squarely on her shoulders, and she certainly answered the call. Not enough emphasis can be placed on the importance of the pitcher in fast pitch softball because she alone can certainly make or break a game.

The tone for the game was set in the top of the first when Alyssa Bishop dove to full extension in center field to rob Callaway of what seemed to be a sure base hit.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Braves bats came alive as Bishop, Tiffany Smith, and Candace Ray all drove in runs which were scored by Cali Harrod, Jasmine Jacobs, and Bishop.

After one inning the Braves were up 3-0. In the Braves half of the second inning, back-to-back doubles by Senior Katie Lego and Jasmine Jacobs extended the lead to 4-0.

The Cavs only got on the board once on the day on a 6th inning HR by Jessica Siggers. In the top of the seventh, Alicia Carroll shut down the Cavs bats once again to seal a 6-1 victory.

The Lady Braves (21-7) will now host the Lovett Lions (21-6) in a three game series which will begin with a double-header Wednesday at Heard High School beginning at 5:00. In the event of a split, game 3 would take place on Thursday. Good luck to our Lady Braves in the State Playoffs.
