(Franklin, GA) — The No. 1 seed in Region 5-AA, the Lady Braves scored an emphatic 50-33 win over the No. 5 seeded Lamar County Trojans Thursday night to earn a spot in tonight’s Region 5-AA Championship game.
The Lady Braves will be looking for back-to-back titles and as they face off with rival Callaway who edged Temple 60-53 in the early semifinal game.
The senior power combo of Hannah Sanders and Kimberly Harris led the way in the semi win combining for 30 of the teams 50 total points.
Harris was a beast on both ends of the floor scoring 16 and hauling in 16 rebounds for yet another double-double. Sanders had 14 and looks to be fully healed from a mid-season injury.
Senior Alyssa Cosper also seems to be near 100% after her injury and she had seven points Thursday night including a 3-point shot in the first quarter.
Another senior, Ally Harris, drained two from downtown as the home team dominated the first quarter leading 20-2 heading into the second.
Lamar County tried to utilize a holding the ball tactic in the middle of the second which kept the scoring to a minimum as the game was 20-4 at the half before the Lady Braves again pulled away in the third quarter.
Coach Helen Akins was pleased at her girls gritty performance and hopes to see more of the same in tonight’s Region 5-AA title tilt.
“I thought our defense was really strong tonight — so proud of our effort there. Sage did a good job handling the ball tonight and Alyssa had such a good game for us as did Kimberly and Hannah,” said Akins. “The crowd was also huge tonight and we are so thankful for the support — that’s what you expect when you are from Heard County.”
The Lady Braves take on Callaway tonight at 7:00 in the women’s Championship game at HHS.
