Lady Braves defeat large school, extend winning streak to 13

(Franklin) — The Heard High School newspaper The Warcry put it best perhaps when they posted the following after the Lady Braves softball game at the high school yesterday afternoon:

“On a night when they had every excuse to not play well, our young ladies dug deep giving our community a moment to smile in a week of sorrow — pulling off one of the most impressive victories in the history of Heard County athletics – defeating AAAAAA East Coweta 3-1!”

The Warcry echoed the sentiments of many in the Brave Nation as the Lady Braves extended their current winning streak to 13 Monday afternoon in a game moved to an earlier start time in order to allow players and students to attend the viewing for fallen classmate Austin Pope Monday evening.

The team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and held on for one of the biggest wins in school history over one of the top softball programs and largest schools in the state of Georgia.

Pitcher Jordan Watson and the team have served major notice to Class AA over the last few weeks that they are the team to beat for this year’s state championship and Monday’s win only served to cement that notion further.

Tuesday’s scheduled game at Newnan as well as most other after school activities have been postponed in order to allow students to attend Pope’s funeral at 4:00 Tuesday afternoon at Mckoon’s Funeral Home in Newnan.

The Lady Braves return to the diamond Thursday for a region road clash at Temple. Another huge match-up looms next Monday when the team travels to Northgate (AAAA) for a game that will feature the number one teams in the state from two different classifications.
