Lady Braves edge #2 ranked Vikings

(Franklin) — Jordan Watson pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night to secure perhaps the biggest win in school history as the Lady Braves knocked off the Northgate Lady Vikings 6-5 at HHS.

The Vikings (12-4) entered the game ranked #2 in the state in Class AAAAA and sporting a five game winning streak while the Lady Braves (12-7-1) came in as the #4 team in Class AA.

It was the first time the Lady Braves have ever defeated the Vikings and the win did not come easy with the Vikings featuring perhaps the most solid hitting line-up the Braves have faced all season. The Lady Braves battled back after being down two times during the game.

After Ebonee Echols led the game off with a long homer to right field in the first inning, the Lady Braves answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning with big hits by Cali Harrod, Anna Shelnutt, and Jordan Watson to take a 2-1 lead.

After the Vikings again took a 3-2 lead on another homer by Alyssa Allen in the top of the third, the Lady Braves came back yet again with a huge 2-RBI double by second baseman Hattie Yarbrough to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hannah Stephens drove home a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth which served as the game winner after the Vikings pushed one across in the seventh and loaded the bases before Watson got the big final out on a ground-out to Harrod who tossed to Yarbrough for the final out at second. The Lady Braves played strong error-less defense during the entire game.

“I told the girls if they can come back against that line-up right there that is just awesome,” said Coach Matt Hornsby after the game.

“Even counting Buford that might be the strongest line-up we have faced top to bottom. They squared up more balls up off of Jordan than anybody we have faced all year. Our defense played well and being on the same page was also important on that last ball to Cali because I am not sure we could have got that girl out at first. We had girls laying out in the outfield. At least by beating a team of the caliber of Northgate, we know the tough schedule is working for us.”

The Lady Braves return to action at home today versus Callaway (5:30 pm) before finally opening region 5-AA play on tomorrow at home versus Chattahoochee County (5:30 pm).

The JV Lady Braves also scored a huge victory in the early game by the same final score of 6-5.

After entering the bottom of the last inning trailing 5-3, the JV Lady Braves stormed back to win the game on a two-out walk-off triple by first baseman Katie Minix which scored pinch runner Alexis Nelms.

Allie Harris, Shealyn Sumner, and Sarah Schofield also made big contributions at the plate in the late comeback. Hattie Yarbrough got the win on the mound.

Northgate's Ebonee Echols bats in the first inning against her future Michigan State teammate Jordan Watson with future FSU catcher Anna Shelnutt behind the plate. The Lady Braves knocked off Northgate 6-5 Tuesday at home.
