Lady Braves edge rival Blue Devils

(Franklin) — The Lady Braves seemed to have Friday night’s big Region 5-AA match-up with the Bremen Lady Blue Devils in control with a 12 point lead late in the third quarter before the Blue Devils stormed back to cut that lead to just one entering the fourth quarter.

The Lady Braves would persevere, however, and notch a 41-40 win after a game-winning basket by junior Madison Whitehead with just 13 seconds to play in the game.

Whitehead led the scoring for the Lady Braves with 14 on the night.

“That little Madi — she is just all over the place — she gives everything she has all the time,” said Coach Helen Akins after the game.

The win was a huge one for the Lady Braves as they head into next weekend’s Region 5-AA tournament at Manchester.

“Bremen has gotten a lot better — they aren’t the most athletic team — but they are very fundamental,” said Akins.

Junior Jordan Watson also had a big game for the Lady Braves down low scoring 13 points. Senior Cali Harrod had seven points and Erica Emory scored four.

“We went through that spurt in the second half where we didn’t score for a while and they just slowly chipped away at it and got back in the game, but I am just so proud of our girls for not hanging their heads — they just kept playing and kept fighting.”

Friday’s win gives the Lady Braves a number three seed heading into that tourney and they will face the Bowdon Red Devilettes for the fourth time this season.

Akins thinks it may be time for another win for girls as the teams have flip-flopped wins each time with Bowdon winning in Franklin earlier this week.

That game will take place in Manchester at 4:00 p.m. Friday and the winner will advance to the Region 5-AA Championship and a 6:00 p.m. tip on Saturday.

The winner will also earn a coveted home playoff game in the first round of the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs which would be huge as each team looks to avoid traveling to face one of the top teams in the state from the private school region in round one.

In the other tournament match-up host and top seeded Manchester will host Bremen who just edged out Chattahoochee County on a tie-breaker for the number four seed.

The first round of the state tournament takes place February 17-18.
