Lady Braves go on 20-0 run, roll past Devils

(Bremen, GA) — The first time the Lady Braves met the Bremen Blue Devils in Franklin in mid January, the Lady Braves were coming off a 10 day layoff and started the game out slow before moving on to a 13 point victory.

The girls traveled to Bremen Tuesday night once again off a 10 day layoff but this time without the rust as the Lady Braves jumped out of the gate with an uber impressive 20-0 run to open the contest.

The squad went on to win by a final score of 58-32 to remain a perfect 4-0 halfway through the region slate and 15-3 overall.

Junior Zekylah Boyd continued to play some great basketball leading the Lady Braves with 20 points and seven rebounds while also tallying three assists and three steals.

Senior Sophia Long also had another big night with 10 points, four assists, and four steals while sophomore Jasmine Owens scored 12.

Jayden Boykin continued her stellar freshman season a solid night including 10 points, five assists, five steals, and three blocked shots.

Shyann Kelley played well off the bench with six rebounds as did senior Briana Labaff who scored four points while going 2-for-2 from the foul line.

Senior Hermonie Garza was again a defensive leader with six rebounds and two assists.

Head coach Helen Akins continues to be impressed with her squad’s hard work on the defensive end of the floor.

“I’m super proud of how we came out from the get-go especially after not playing for 10 days again,” said Akins after the game.

“I just feel like our defense is playing very well right now. Sometimes we may or may not be making shots but our defense just keeps coming through for us. We got some of our other girls off the bench some minutes tonight which should really help us out down the stretch.”

Now the No. 8 ranked team in Class AA according to Score Atlanta, the Lady Braves face another important region battle this Friday night at Callaway in Lagrange.

The Lady Braves (15-3, 4-0) defeated Callaway 48-40 in Franklin on January 19. The Lady Cavaliers (8-6, 4-1) are currently in second place in Region 5-AA.

The top seed after the regular season will host the Region 5-AA tournament where Class AA State Playoff seedings will be on the line.

Region 5-AA crosses over to meet Region 8-AA from northeast Georgia in round one matchups.

Due to COVID, the decision was made recently to have separate region tournaments for boys and girls that will be held at separate locations and on different days.
