Lady Braves move to 13-3 overall with region win over Callaway

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County Lady Braves moved to 13-3 on the season and 2-0 in Region 5-AA with a 48-40 win over rival Callaway in Franklin Tuesday night.

Ranked No. 6 in the state in Class AA, the hometown girls jumped out to a strong start and held a 17-2 lead before the Lady Cavs rallied to close the gap to 41-33 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Sophia Long was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to seal a strong and important win for Coach Helen Akins’s squad.

The top girls seed in the region will host the 2021 Region 5-AA Tournament in February.

Three Lady Braves finished with double-digits in the big home win with senior Hermonie Garza and sophomore Jasmine Owens each scoring 14 while freshman Jayden Boykin had 10.

Boykin added 10 rebounds for the double-double and Owens hauled in nine rebounds.

Zekylah Boyd had five points, seven rebounds and three steals. Garza had four steals versus a big Lady Cavalier lineup.

The Lady Braves return home for another Region 5-AA contest tomorrow as they host Temple at 6:00 PM.

In boys’ action, the Braves fell to the Cavaliers 58-49 after rebounding from a 16-point halftime deficit to keep it close.

Darius Herring led the Braves with 14 points while Ike O’Neal scored 12 and senior Ethan Lawson tallied nine on three 3-point baskets from beyond the arc. Jameer Cook and Ayden Cannon each scored five points as the Braves fell to 1-1 in region play.

The Braves will also meet Temple Friday night in Franklin before hosting Central in a make-up game Saturday at 4:30 PM.

The JV boys will play Temple Friday at 4:30 OM and Central Saturday at 3:00 PM.
