Lady Braves open Region 5-AA play on a High Note

(Bowdon, GA) — The Lady Braves bounced back from a tough weekend loss in a big way Tuesday night as they knocked off the Bowdon Red Devilettes 60-39 on the road to open the Region 5-AA schedule.

It was also an impressive 33 point turnaround from a meeting with the Devilettes just a week earlier in the Haralson County tournament.

Junior Madison Whitehead continued her stellar season pouring in 18 points to lead the scoring for the Lady Braves.

The win was also the first region victory for first year head coach Helen Akins. According to Akins getting that first region win was extra sweet because it came on the road.

“It was huge!,” said Akins after the game. “It doesn’t get any better than winning a rival game on the road. The key tonight was defense, defense, defense!”

Akins was also proud of the continued solid play by Whitehead. “Madison plays with all heart and hustle — she had a great night!, said Akins.

Other top scorers for the Lady Braves were Erica Emory with 13, Jordan Watson with 12, and Cali Harrod with eight. Freshman Sage Kelley, who is contributing a lot of quality minutes this season for a young player had four points.

The Lady Braves will return home Friday night to host Temple in the Region 5-AA home opener (6:00 tip).

The varsity boys team continued to try and find their way out of a slump but fell 73-35 to the Red Devils. They will also host Temple on Friday night in Franklin.
