Lady Braves pick up 16th straight region win

(Lagrange, GA) — The Lady Braves softball team knocked off a game Callaway squad 7-3 Thursday in Lagrange as the team extended it’s Region 5-AA winning streak to 16 games.

The last Region 5-AA loss for Coach Matt Hornsby’s squad came in a 3-2 regular season loss to Bremen on October 1, 2015.

Taylor Paris had a big 2-RBI double in the Lady Braves 7-3 win Thursday at Callaway

Thursday’s win over the Cavs didn’t come easy for the Lady Braves with just one run separating the rivals before the final inning.

The Lady Braves scored three in the top of the seventh and Katelyn Jiles was stellar in relief of winning pitcher Sydney Gay to secure the big road win.

A couple of key at bats from young freshman Alyssa Hall and Emily Shelnutt along with RBI hits from Hannah Holden and Lora Glover led to the three runs scored as the lead was just 4-3 after six innings.

Jiles struck out seven batters in just 2 and 2/3 innings of relief in her most dominant outing to date. Gay scattered four hits and allowed just one earned run in four plus innings.

Taylor Paris had the big hit early in the game, a double that drove in two.

The Lady Braves managed just five hits off of Callaway starter Oeisha Jenkins who was strong in a complete game performance.

The Lady Braves also played well defensively including a diving catch by senior right fielder Brittany Scarborough to rob a base hit in the bottom of the fourth.

Trent Bianco coached the Braves Thursday with Hornsby serving the second of a two game suspension after being ejected from a JV game at Rockmart Wednesday. Bianco was pleased with the effort from the girls on the road.

“That was a complete team win out there today with Sydney pitching great early and then Jiles coming in and slamming the door to close it out — that’s the best she’s pitched all year,” said Bianco.

“I’m also very proud of our two young freshman, Alyssa and Emily, for coming through with those big hits late. It says a lot about our girls to come back out after getting our noses bloodied a  little bit at Rockmart yesterday,” added Bianco. “Some teams would fold after a loss like that but these girls came out today and got it right back on track with a big region win.”

Marissa Garza notched her seventh homer of the season in Wednesday’s loss at Rockmart.

The Lady Braves (7-10, 4-0) will host Villa Rica in a non-region make-up game tomorrow at noon before returning to region play with a doubleheader versus Jordan Monday at HHS.

Barring a major upset from the Red Jackets Monday, the Lady Braves will do battle with Lamar County (11-4, 5-0) in the last two games of the regular season to determine the Region 5-AA tournament seedings.

The Lady Braves host the Trojans on Sept. 28 and travel to Barnesville for a rematch on October 4 to determine the important home field advantage for the Region 5-AA tournament on Saturday, October 7.

The top four seeds at the Region Tournament will advance to the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs beginning on October 12-13.
