(Bremen, GA) – The Lady Braves (7-2, 2-0) rolled over another top ten team Tuesday afternoon, scoring an 8-1 knockout of the state’s #7 ranked Lady Blue Devils in Bremen. It was the team’s fifth win this season over a top 10 team and more importantly another big Region 5-AA win.
The Lady Braves put the game out of reach early with five first inning runs and sophomore pitching sensation Jordan Watson continued to shine on the hill allowing only one hit in six innings pitched. Senior Shelby O’Neal pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Shemeka Parks, Anna Shelnutt, and Madison Whitehead each had three hits at the plate with Whitehead and Shelnutt adding two RBI’s each as well. Watson proved equally damaging to the Devils at the plate with a double and three RBI’s.
Head coach Matt Hornsby was glad to see a big offensive day from his girls. “It looks like our hitting is finally coming on strong now that we are playing games on a consistent basis which is what we were hoping for,” said Hornsby. “When you score five in the first and have a couple really big two-out hits, it takes the breath out of them and the pressure off of us so that we can just play Heard County softball. Today was big for us!”
The Lady Braves return home Thursday to play a double-header versus two more region opponents Chattahoochee County (4:30) and Spencer (5:30).
The only two losses this season by the Lady Braves have come to two ranked AAAA schools by a combined total of only three runs.
In other softball action Tuesday, the HCMS Lady Braves fought back from an early 9-0 deficit but came up short 13-5 to the Central Lions.
