Lady Braves run region mark to 2-0

(Franklin, GA) — The Lady Brave varsity softball team improved to 2-0 in Region 5-AA and 6-3 overall with a four inning 14-0 win over the Temple Lady Tigers Tuesday afternoon at HCHS.

Senior Sydney Gay earned the win on the mound and had 3 RBI’s Tuesday

The Lady Braves batted around while jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Five Lady Braves finished the game with multiple hits including freshman Janiyah Strong who homered in the second inning to establish a new freshman home run record for a season with six.

FSU catcher and former Lady Brave Anna Shelnutt was the record holder having blasted five during her freshman season in 2013. Shelnutt also holds the overall single season record with 13 dingers in her senior year.

Other Lady braves with two hits efforts were Hannah Holden, Emma Helton, Marissa Garza, and Mackenzie White.

Starting pitcher Sydney Gay earned the win on the hill pitching three strong innings while allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three. Gay also helped out at the plate with a double and three runs batted in.

Speedy senior pinch-runner Alexus Crawford scored twice and stole a base. As a team, Coach Matt Hornsby’s squad pounded out 14 hits.

“We have struggled against their pitcher in the past and it was good to see our girls come out and have a good approach,” said Hornsby.

“She throws hard so it is one of those things where if you can get your timing right and have a good approach it’s just about staying short with your hands and squaring balls up from there — we did an excellent job with that today from our first at bat on.”

The Lady Braves return to non-region play today with a road trip to Troup County at 5:55 PM. The JV Lady Braves will also battle the Tigers at 4:30 PM.
