Lady Braves score 15 in season-opening road win

(Franklin, GA) — The Lady Braves opened the softball regular season Monday with a 15-1 road win over Class A rival Bowdon.

The Lady Braves jumped out to a huge 7-0 lead after plating seven runs on eight hits in the top of the first inning.

Freshmen Lady Braves Aubrey Ussery (L), LilyRae Fulford, and Chloe Scarborough (R) all saw playing time in a 15-1 opening day win at Bowdon Monday

The game was delayed for a short time after just one batter due to nearby lightning.

The Red Devilette pitching staff settled down a bit allowing just single runs to the Lady Braves in the second and third innings before the Lady Braves again broke away with six runs in the fourth to win via the run rule after that inning.

The Devils lone run in the game came on a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning.

The freshman pitching tandem of LilyRae Fulford and Chloe Scarborough tossed two innings apiece with Fulford earning her first career win in her very first start.

Fulford tossed the first two innings scattering two hits and she did not walk a batter.

Offensively, several Lady Braves tallied big opening day numbers led by leadoff hitting junior shortstop Emma Helton. Helton set the pace going 4-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and three runs scored.

Junior catcher Mackenzie White and sophomore Chasity Kates providing the bulk of the run production for Coach Matt Hornsby with each driving home three runs. White went 3-for-4 with a double while the speedy left-hand hitting Kates was 2-for-2 with a steal.

Junior third baseman Janiyah Strong also had a solid effort with two base hits, a steal, two runs scored and two RBI’s.

Zekylah Boyd also drove home two while Beth Taylor and Alyssa Hall each drove in one. Freshman Aubrey Ussery walked and scored twice in her first start at first base.

“Their pitcher has given us trouble in the past so it was good to see our girls come out and execute a game plan that we worked on before we even got on the bus,” said Coach Hornsby after the game.

The Lady Braves will face much stiffer competition Wednesday afternoon when they host Harris County in the regular season home opener. The Tigers finished as the Class AAAAA State Runner-ups last season to Locust Grove.

Wednesday’s game versus the Tigers will get started with a first pitch at 6:00 PM following a 4:30 PM JV game between the two schools.

The Lady Braves will close out the week on Thursday at former Region 5-AA rival Lamar County in Barnesville. The Trojans are now competing in Region 3-AA.
