Lady Braves shine at Chattahoochee River Invite

(Franklin, GA) — The Lady Braves varsity track squad shined in a big way at last Thursday’s second annual Chattahoochee River Invitational at Heard County Middle School.

The girls took earned the top prize with 87 points finishing just ahead of fellow Class AA rival Rockmart (84 points) and third place Villa Rica (78 points). The stacked field at the invite featured 10 female teams.

The Brave varsity boys team finished in ninth place out of 12 competing teams.

Leading the way for Coach Cory Shelnutt and the Lady Braves was sophomore field athlete Tori Caldwell as she took home first place in both the High Jump (4-10.00) and the Pole Vault (8-00.00).

Freshman Beth Taylor continued her early success with a first place finish in the Discus Throw (103-07) and a solid fifth place finish in the Shot Put.

Newcomer Miranda Harbin showed continued success with a top finish in the Long Jump (16-02.00) and a third place finish in the 100 Meter Dash.

Senior Holly Moreland was again strong in the distance running events earning a first place finish in the 3200 Meter and a fourth place in the 1600 Meter.

Yet another freshman Hermonie Garza scored an awesome second place finish in the Long Jump.

In the male competitions, Bailey Scarborough was the top Brave finisher with a second place in the Pole Vault.

Tray Dunson added a third place finish in the Long Jump while Ethan Lawson took fifth in the 1600 and Jaidan Cameron claimed fifth in the Discus Throw.

The Braves are hosting the Region 5-AA tournament at HCMS today and Thursday. Today’s slate of field events and heats will begin at 10:00 AM and Thursday’s running events and finals will begin at 3:00 PM.

The state sectional meet takes place next Saturday, April 28 at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, GA and the Class AA State Championships will be May 10-12 in Albany, GA.
