Lady Braves tame Lions at shootout

(Mount Zion, GA) — The Lady Braves quickly bounced back from Thursday’s home setback to Haralson County by scoring a solid win over the Central Lady Lions on day one of the 2016 Thanksgiving Shootout tournament Saturday afternoon at Mount Zion.

The Lady Braves picked up the 37-29 victory with a solid defensive effort that limited the Lady Lions to just five first quarter points and 11 first half points.

For the third straight game, senior Kimberly Harris paced the offense with 18 points including a 3-point basket while sinking 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Senior Hannah Sanders also played well scoring eight and grabbing several rebounds. Junior Emily Iddins scored six points.

“Central has a very scrappy team. We didn’t start off to great but I thought we finished pretty well and handled the basketball a little better that we did last time,” said Coach Helen Akins after the game.

“We still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do — but we hit some free throws at the end to finish the game off and I was proud.”

Leading the way for Central was senior Alexis Farley with 15 points all on 3-point buckets.

In game one of the tourney Saturday, Ranburne knocked off Bremen 66-45. In game three, North Paulding defeated Bowdon 73-31.

The Lady Braves will continue with the tournament in Mount Zion this week as they face Bowdon tomorrow at 4:30 PM and North Paulding at 3:00 PM on Tuesday.

Following Thanksgiving break, the girls and the boys teams will both travel to Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday, November 28 (6:00/7:30 PM).
