Lady Braves tame Tigers

(Franklin) — The Lady Braves varsity softball team moved to 2-0 in Region 5-AA play Wednesday with a 6-3 home win over Temple.

Sophomore pitcher Sydney Gay started the game on the mound and notched her first career varsity win. Gay tossed 5 2/3 innings before Haley Bennett came on to close out the game and earn the save.

Gay finished with six strikeouts with just four hits and one walk, and Bennett struck out two while allowing no hits or free passes.

Gay was the fourth different starting pitcher used by Coach Matt Hornsby in 2016. Despite the lack of upperclassmen hurlers this season, Hornsby has been able to rely on the depth of a very young staff to keep opposing hitters on their toes.

Three different Lady Braves led the way offensively with multiple hit performances. Ally Harris, Kaitlyn Baldwin, and freshman Brittany Graley each had two hits to go along with an RBI.

Bennett scored two runs while Hannah Holden, Brittany Scarborough, and Aspen Barker drove in the remaining runs. Baldwin tallied three stolen bases.

Barker, Harris, and Anna Cosper each had sacrifices in the important region win.

After competing in the Trojan Slam this weekend in Carrollton, the Lady Braves (7-6,2-0)  return home Tuesday for a huge Region 5-AA contest versus Lamar County (10-6-1, 2-0) at 5:30 PM at HHS.

The two games with the Lady Trojans will likely determine the No. 1 seed and home field advantage for the Region 5-AA Tournament on Saturday, October 8.

The state playoffs take place October 12-13 and Region 5-AA battles Region 7-AA in the opening series.
