Lady Braves Trounce Red Devilettes

(Bremen, GA) — The Lady Braves got the postseason off to a rousing start Thursday afternoon with a 15-0 thumping of the Bowdon Red Devilettes in the semi-finals of the Region 5-AA softball tournament at Bremen.

The Lady Braves’ offense scorched the ball all day long, plating two runs in the first and third innings, and 11 in a second inning where 14 batters came to the plate. The huge win ensures at least one first round state playoff series next week at Heard High School.

It was as if nothing could go wrong for the Lady Braves and nothing could go right for the Devilettes who allowed a number of unearned Brave runs to cross the plate mostly due to fly balls getting lost in the sun.

Jordan Watson and Sarah Schofield pitched lights out on the mound to lead the squad defensively.

Watson tossed two innings allowing just one walk and Schofield came on in the third shutting down the Devilettes 1-2-3 for the run-rule save.

Thanks to a first inning double play turned by Watson and first baseman Hannah Stephens, the two pitchers faced the minimum.

Seniors Johanna Beyer, Madison Whitehead, and Alexis Raines led the way at the plate.

Beyer blasted a 2-run double and a 3-run homer in the second inning alone and she finished with five RBI’s on the day.

Alexis Raines had a 2-run double in the first and a 2-run homer in the third that sealed the run-rule win. Whitehead was 3-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Senior Anna Shelnutt had two base hits, and junior Alyssa Cosper had a nice game as well driving in a run, stealing a base, and scoring twice.

“We knew that they had two good pitchers and since last Thursday we have been working on getting ready for those two pitchers and what they were going to try and do,” said Coach Matt Hornsby after the game.

“I thought our girls did an awesome job of making adjustments and knowing what those two pitchers were going to do — they both have different approaches, and I thought we did a good job of battling with two strikes.”

Hornsby was also pleased with the effort of both his senior pitchers.

“Jordan and Sarah did a great job against a good line-up of hitters over there — I mean those are the girls that put 12 on us last time we played them,” Hornsby stated.

“We don’t have as much time to work on Bremen as we did on Bowdon but we have got to figure out a way to score some runs on Bremen. We have to do better than we did last Thursday when we only scored two.”

The Lady Braves will battle the Blue Devils for the Region 5-AA Championship for the third straight season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday in Bremen.

Bremen earned their spot in Saturday’s championship game with a 16-1 win over Temple who knocked off Manchester in the play-in game.

Potential first round Region 8-AA home match-ups for Bremen or Heard include Washington-Wilkes and Rabun County.

Temple and Bowdon will also play Saturday at noon for the No. 3 seed. They will each travel to face either Social Circle or Union County next week.

First round best-of-3 playoff games are scheduled for double-headers on Wednesday and “if” games on Thursday.
