Lady Braves upend Decatur; Advance to Sweet 16

Queen Alford battles Jemeka Parks

The Lady Braves took advantage of the easiest shot in basketball Friday night on their way to a big win over the Decatur Bulldogs, an athletically superior team with a huge size advantage.

When the visiting Bulldogs stepped off their charter bus Friday night at Heard High School it appeared the Lady Braves might be in some serious trouble.

At tip-off,  five of the six most imposing  girls on the court were wearing blue and gold.

Decatur guard Queen Alford lived up to the hype as she led all scorers with 27 including four 3-pointers, but the Lady Braves were able to feed off the momentum of last week’s region tournament win on the way to victory.

The home side of  the gym was filled to capacity with raucous fans who were clearly pumped.

The game started out sloppy for both teams and neither could seem to find any rhythm. The Bulldogs managed to lead by as many as six in the first period, but the Lady Braves closed the gap to 10-7 at the end of the quarter.

As the second quarter got underway Reece Walker, who led all scorers in the first half with nine points, made a fantastic bucket as she was fouled. She sank the plus-one free throw to tie the score at 10. The Bulldogs again went up by six and led by four at the half.

The Braves were hanging strong, but with the depth of Decatur, Brave fans were wondering if this might be another one of those times where a Region 6-AA school would out-man our girls late in the game.

Alford drained one of her four 3-pointers to start the second half that quickly put the Braves down seven, but Jemeka Parks did the same at the other end which really boosted the crowd into a frenzy.

Parks led the scoring for Coach Williams with 23 and played a huge part in the solid team free-throw percentage going to the line often and executing. After trailing by one at the end of three periods, the Lady Braves outscored the Bulldogs 21-12 in the fourth quarter to win 55-47 and advance to the Sweet 16 round of the state tournament.

The Lady Braves (23-3) will next play host to the Calhoun Yellow Jackets (23-5) from Region 7-AA Tuesday night at the high school. The Jackets knocked off Rabun County Friday night 63-51 in an exciting overtime game.

The teams will be playing for the opportunity to travel to Dalton, GA next Friday night to face the three-time defending state champion Buford Wolves.

“We did a great job getting to the line and making our foul shots. That’s what we have worked on all year. We used our speed to our advantage and our press defense was effective at slowing them down. We had to overcome a huge size advantage and I am really proud of how all of our girls responded.”-Valeree Williams
