Lions Best Braves in Battle of State Softball Powers

(Franklin) — The #1 ranked softball team in Class AAA (AJC) in the state of Georgia visited Heard High School Monday evening and proved why they are deserving of the top ranking, knocked off the #3 ranked Class AA (AJC) Lady Braves for the second time this season.

The Central Lady Lions earned an 8-5 win in an unusually high scoring affair featuring two of the top pitchers in the state in Jordan Watson of the Braves and Taylor Funk of the Lions.

The game featured several shifts in momentum but the Lady Lions led the game wire to wire after a two-run homer by Hayley Sims in the top half of the first inning.

The Lady Braves were able to pound out four hits off Funk in the first two frames but only managed one run on Alexis Raines’ second homer of the season in the second inning.

Coach Hornsby’s squad looked to be out of it after the Lady Lions picked up single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth to take a 5-1 lead but the Lady Braves battled back thanks mostly to a huge triple by Johanna Beyer in the bottom of the sixth that scored two runs. Beyer came all the way home as well due to a Lion throwing error to draw the Lady Braves within one run at 5-4.

The Lady Lions responded with three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, two scoring on a two-run double by catcher Maddie Dodson.

Senior Cali Harrod scored in the bottom of the seventh on a double by junior Anna Shelnutt but it would not be enough as the Lady Lions prevailed by the final score of 8-5. It was the season finale for the talented Central squad which only lost one game all season long (7-2 to Allatoona on September 12).

The Lady Braves (17-8-1) still have unfinished Region 5-AA business to take care of as they travel to Manchester Tuesday (5:30) before returning home for Cali Harrod Senior Night Thursday at 7:00 p.m. versus Bremen.
