Lions Topple Lady Braves

(Franklin) — The GHSA State Playoffs returned to Heard High School for the first time since 2011 Tuesday night where the Lovett Lions knocked off the Lady Braves 45-36, ending the home team’s season.

It was a game of streaks and surges with the Lions dominating the first and third quarters and the Lady braves fighting back in the second and fourth quarters.

A big and athletic Lovett squad took a 14-6 lead after the first quarter before the Lady Braves stormed back with an 11-0 run to end the half and close to within four points.

The Lions came out strong again on defense in the third quarter holding Coach Helen Akins’ squad to just four points.

The girls fought hard to the end but came up short to the #3 seeded private school from Region 6-AA.

Junior Jordan Watson led the way statistically with nine points and 17 rebounds. Madison Whitehead had seven points while Cali Harrod and Kimberly Harris each had six. Harris also added nine rebounds. Te’Erica led the Lions with 22 points.

“We never quit tonight and we played hard,” said Akins after the game. “You know we have those lapses where we get down and don’t score and then we have to fight so hard to come back — sometimes we are able to overcome but tonight we weren’t able to.”

LovettOverall, Akins was pleased with the effort of her team in her first season as Lady Braves head coach.

“We met our goal this year which was to be in the top four in the region and make the state playoffs. We ended up runner-up in the region and made it to the state playoffs but came up a little short, but I am just real proud.”

Akins will be without two players next season, losing Cali Harrod and Whitney Emory to graduation.

Region 5-AA only advanced one team to the sweet sixteen as top seeded Manchester blew out Hapeville Charter 59-26.

Bowdon fell to Wesleyan on the road 64-38 and Bremen struggled at top ranked Holy Innocence losing 79-25.
