Local construction worker dies after being hit by car on I-85

(Franklin, GA) — A local construction worker passed away Saturday at Grady Hospital in Atlanta from injuries he suffered after being hit by a car on I-85 early Friday morning in Gwinnett County.

Lamar Ragland

Lamar Ragland, age 42, of Franklin was removing barrels from the end of a closed section of the interstate around 5:00 AM Friday in preparation for reopening.

Gwinnett Police say a driver in a Toyota Corolla entered the closed lane and hit Ragland while trying to exit onto I-985.

The driver, Peter Rozboril, remained at the scene and spoke with investigators.

Police say Rozboril will likely face homicide by vehicle and traffic charges. Ragland was wearing a reflective jacket and helmet at the time.

Ragland’s son Jakob, a senior at Heard County High School, says his dad was a special man.

“My daddy was the most influential person in my life. Every time I messed up, he was always here to tell me why I was wrong and then hug me and tell me it’s okay afterwards,” says Jakob. “He spent his whole life putting his loved ones before himself and leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Words can’t describe the pain that we are feeling right now, but we all know that he is in a much better place than here.”

Funeral Services for Lamar Ragland will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday afternoon from the chapel of the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home in Lagrange. The family will receive friends at the funeral home (Wednesday) evening from 6 until 8 PM.

My family and I offer our sincerest condolences to the Lamar Ragland family. We and many others who knew Lamar are now heartbroken by his passing. We are very saddened about the tragic accident that took the young life of such a great man, a loving father, a friend to all.

I well remember his vibrant personality as his teacher many years ago. He was highly intelligent, quick witted and always happy. Lamar always had a great outlook on life which carried over into his adult life.

My family and I will continue to pray that God will bless and bring peace to his family.

    Mart, Stephanie and Haley
