Local Kids Enjoy Free Summer Basketball Camp

This past June about 35 local boys and girls between the ages of 6-13 were able to enjoy a free basketball camp thanks to the efforts of local native Edna “Earl” Goss and the contributions ofHeard County Sheriff Ross Henry and the owners of the Texaco gas station.

The three-week camp held at the recreation department gave the kids an opportunity to learn and develop skills in dribbling, passing, and shooting as well as sportsmanship and teamwork.

The kids were also given food and drinks each day and seemed to have a great time participating. Recreation Department Director David Julien stated that Edna did a great job with the camp especially considering she put the whole thing together basically on her own.

When we asked young Cedric Ware about the experience he replied it was “the best camp ever.” Jordan Summers who was participating in basketball for the very first time was most complimentary of the hamburgers they were served at camp.

Jordan’s grandparents Richard and Linda Summers were on hand almost everyday of the camp and stated they were very proud their grandson was getting a chance to try a new sport and emphasized what a great job Edna had done with the kids.

Several of the other kids were also quick to point out just how much they enjoyed the camp.
