Local Special Olympics Spring Games

(Centralhatchee/Times~Journal) — It was a beautiful day and the weather was perfect on Tuesday, April 26 as the crowd cheered for the athletes at the Heard County Special Olympics Local Spring Games Long Distance Walking/Running Competition.

In the opening ceremony Centralhatchee Mayor, Barbie Crockett welcomed all to the event. Cody Meeks from Antioch Baptist Church gave the invocation. Sha-Li Perkins, SOGA Regional Director and Sandy Entrekin from Carroll EMC were the motivational speakers for the event.

The competition began around 11:00am and an award ceremony was held in honor of each of the athletes that participated.

Special recognition was given to the H. C. High School volunteers which were: Dominique Carter, Timothy Shoemake, Jordarius Foster, Cody Meeks, Zach Hyatt, Katie Minix, Brooke Williams, Emanuel Mcrath, Thomas Irwin, Monterrion Cook, John Douglas Mullinax and Gabby Owensby.

Wylene Spearman, H.C. Local Coordinator for Special Olympics recognized Sha-Li Perkins, Regional Manager for Special Olympics of Georgia, Carroll EMC for providing ten volunteers, Community volunteer Christine Nolley, H.C. BOE member, Mike Crockett, and Centralhatchee Mayor, Barbie Crockett.

Mrs. Spearman presented Senior awards to Amber Cribbs and Anthony Brand for special recognition for their sports accolades and state medals and ribbons received while participating in the Special Olympics Year-round Sports Program.

Anthony is considered our Heard County Special Olympics Heavyweight Champion. From State Winter Games, he has bought home “the gold” for two years in a row. Anthony has also received many the Special Olympics Bravy Awards and Special Olympics Athlete of the Year for the past two years.  Anthony truly represents the spirit of Special Olympics.

Spearman thanked the H.C. School System teachers, assistants, and bus drivers for all their help as well as showed special recognition to the parents in attendance.

After the award ceremony the event ended with a picnic Subway lunch that was provided for all athletes and free time to spend with family and friends at the Centralhatchee Park.
