Local Veterans Honored by Heard County Middle School

Thursday afternoon the students and faculty of Heard County Middle School invited local veterans for their annual Veteran’s Day celebration.

About 40 veterans enjoyed were on hand for the festivities. They arrived to the gym met by massive applause from all of the students who were cheering wildly and waving American flags.

The greeters and escorts for the veterans were Jacob Bishop, Lashon Echols, Collin Nutt, Sarah Schofield, Anna Sims, and Brittney Witcher.

After an introduction by Principal Mike Roberts, Katie Smith read the invocation to kick off the program.

The colors were then presented by Boy Scout Troop #144 members Nathan Pettway and  Jonathan Barrett.

Keagan Spradlin then led everyone in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance which was followed by the middle school band’s performance of the Star Spangled Banner.

The 8th grade Music Appreciation students then sang the Armed Forces Medley and invited the Veterans from each branch to stand as their song was performed.

Next on the itinerary was the introduction of the veterans by Brian Hill. Each veteran came forth to the podium and introduced themselves and explained where they had served.

Madison Jones then read the Veteran’s Day remarks which was followed by concluding remarks by Principal Roberts.

After the ceremony the veterans were invited to the school media center for cake and refreshments.

It was awesome to see our young middle school students show such respect and admiration for our American heroes on such a special holiday. To see more pictures from this event be sure to visit our page at facebook.com/heardcitizen.
