Local woman charged with Elder Exploitation/Neglect

(Franklin, GA) — A local woman is in the Heard County jail today after being arrested recently on several financially related charges involving her grandmother and a local business.

Dayna Nicole East

39-year-old Dayna Nicole East was arrested on August 17, 2017 and charged with Exploitation of an Elder Person, Neglect to an Elder Person, Theft by Taking, Criminal Trespass, and Deposit Account Fraud.

According to lead Franklin Police Department investigator Lt. Tino Brooks, East is accused of overdrawing two of her grandmother’s bank accounts for an undisclosed amount of money. She was Power of Attorney over the accounts.

East is also charged with photo depositing altered checks from two other family members, one her deceased father, at local banks and additionally writing bad checks to a local business.

This is the second time that the grandmother, a well-known long-time resident of Franklin, has allegedly been taken advantage of by a member of her family.

The grandmother’s daughter and East’s mom, Frances Olivia Cummings, was arrested last October and charged with three counts of Neglect of an Elderly Person, two counts of Exploitation of an Elderly Person, and one count of Exploitation of a Disabled Person involving the grandmother and her disabled son.

At that time, Dayna East assumed care of the grandmother and her disabled uncle by gaining power of attorney and assisted them in relocating.

East started a GoFundMe page that was shared here at HeardCitizen.com and quickly raised several thousand dollars for her grandmother and uncle.

According to the report by Lt. Brooks, the GoFundMe account money raised in that campaign was not involved in this investigation.

Brooks says the investigation is still ongoing and further charges may be pending.

I am glad that someone is at least reporting the facts. What ever happened to investigating reporting?
