Lottery fever strikes Heard County!

The excitement was very much in the air today as nearly everyone in Heard County was abuzz about the half-a-billion dollar Mega Millions jackpot that could be drawn tonight.

Lindsay Orr shows off her very first Mega Millions tickets

The estimated $640 million dollar payout is the largest in world history and seemingly everyone today was in hot pursuit of a ticket.

The lines were long nearly all day at Flash Foods in Franklin. Store manager Tracy Gibbons told us that ticket sales were well over the 1000 mark as of 4:00 p.m. and she expected the lines to stay busy right up until tonight’s big drawing.

We were able to catch up with a couple of customers as they waited to make what they hope to be the purchase of a lifetime.

When asked what he would do if he were lucky enough to grab the big prize, local resident Leon Henry stated he would most definitely “go into hiding” which many experts believe to be the proper strategy when one inherits a windfall of this magnitude.

Lindsay Orr, an 18-year-old Southern Union student and HHS graduate bought eight tickets for the big drawing. Lindsay told us that she has never played the lottery before other than one scratch-off where she actually won $40.

“If I win I plan to give a million dollars to everyone in my family and I definitely want to give a large sum to my favorite charity, the Children’s Miracle Network. I also want to buy a house… actually I want to buy a few houses,” stated Lindsay with a sheepish grin.

It is estimated that if no winner is named tonight that next week’s drawing could likely fall somewhere near an unprecedented one billion dollars. Tonight’s big drawing will take place Friday night at 11:00 p.m.
