Middle Braves 4-0 after stopping Bobcats

The HCMS Braves football team moved to 4-0 (3-0 in the division) Wednesday with a big win over the Bobcats of Bay Springs, a larger school from Villa Rica.

The highlight of the scoreless 1st quarter was the second blocked punt by Jacob Bishop in the last two weeks. Bishop, who sports a mohawk, has been a big force on the defensive line this year for Coach Sikes. For a defensive lineman to block punts in consecutive weeks is nearly unheard of but it has been that kind of year for the middle Braves who have their eyes set on a championship this year.

The Braves got on the scoreboard first in the game when Andrew Cannon barreled in from just a couple of yards out for a touchdown and Austin Barron followed that up with a 2-pt. conversion to put the Braves on top 8-0 in the 2nd quarter.

Barron added another TD and 2-pt. conversion before the half to give the Braves a halftime 16-0 lead. Barron, the son of head varsity coach Tim Barron, has been a force all season for the Braves on offense and defense.

The Bay Springs Bobcats would not be counted out as they answered with a long touchdown in the third quarter. The large crowd at the middle school showed a lot of concern as the lead was cut to 16-8 heading to the fourth quarter.

Neither team could get much going late and Bay Springs was driving with under three minutes to go in the game when Austin Barron made a huge interception to seal another big win for the middle Braves and send them to a 4-0 record with just two regular season games left to play.

The Braves will need all the support they can get when they face arch rival Bowdon at home  this Thursday at 4:30 as they try to maintain their perfect record.

Also big news for the Braves was a big win by the JV middle school team vs. Bremen on Tuesday. The Braves won the game 34-8 which featured many 7th graders who played well.
