Middle Braves aiming for third straight title

(Franklin, GA) — The HCMS Boys’ basketball team is aiming for a third straight West Georgia Middle School Championship and appear to be one of the favorites following a 5-0 start in action versus West Georgia teams.

The lone loss on the season for the middle Braves came to Valley, AL at a holiday tournament in Lagrange.

Jonathan Echols has led the way for first year head coach Zerick Green the Braves averaging over 15 points per game in the five wins. His season high of came 21 came in a 54-45 home win versus Mt. Zion and he also tallied 16 points in wins over Temple and Villa Rica.

L.J. Green has been another standout scorer with double digit efforts in the wins at Bowdon and at Temple along with Eli Lawson who scored his season high 11 twice at home versus Villa Rica and Bay Springs.

Camden Cosper has been a strong defender for the Braves and notched his season high of nine points versus Temple. RoRo Edmondson had a nice game versus Mt. Zion when he scored his season high of nine.

Coach Green says that the point guard play of Will Alford and a team effort on both ends of the court have been keys to the team’s early success this season.

“Our eighth grade point guard Will Alford has shown great poise in handling and distributing the basketball this year, says Green. “Overall, it’s been a great team effort by these young guys.”

Coach Green says even in the defeat to a very physical and athletic Valley, AL squad he was proud of the efforts to fight back.

Valley’s speed and aggressiveness forced us out of our normal tempo and we were down at the half 28-8,” says Coach Green. “But these young Braves showed tremendous defensive effort despite being down big and we were able to close the gap to 11 before Valley pulled away late. A lot of teams may have given up but these Braves continued to fight.”

The Braves will host arch rival Bowdon Monday afternoon at HCMS as the regular season heads towards the home stretch. The Braves won 38-23 in the first meeting at Bowdon on December 4 but will expect a strong fight from last year’s runner-ups in the small school division.

The HCMS Lady Braves will tip off at 5:00 PM Monday and the boys will play immediately after at 6:30 PM.
