(Franklin) — The HCMS boys basketball team are off to a scorching start to the regular season after knocking off their first three opponents last week including a surprising win over a strong Bay Springs team on Thursday where Alijah Huzzie scored 21 points including an HCMS record six 3-point baskets in the 51-43 win.

The eighth-grader Huzzie has been a centerpiece in the successful start averaging over 19 points per game.

Connor Nutt was also hot from outside knocking down three 3-point shots and scoring 14 points versus a physically imposing Bobcat squad with a point guard that is taller than the Braves’ center.

“I am just so proud of this group so far,” said head coach Joe Nutt on Friday. “They play with more heart and intensity than any team I have coached at this level.”

The middle Braves started the week at home on Monday with a 62-31 win over Haralson County. Leading the way in that win was Huzzie with 19 and Andrew Leak with 16.

In Wednesday’s 53-37 home win over Callaway, Huzzie scored 18 with four 3-point shots and Nutt scored nine all from long range.

Nutt’s experienced starting five includes all eighth-graders Huzzie, Leak, Nutt, D.J. Emory, and Tray Dunson.

The middle Braves return to action this Friday when they travel to Callaway Middle School for a rematch with the Cavs (4:30 girls followed immediately by the boys).
