(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County Middle School Braves football team proved size doesn’t matter by knocking off a much bigger in stature Callaway Middle squad 20-6 to open the 2016 season Thursday afternoon in Franklin.

Tae Gray led the scoring effort with three touchdowns and new head coach Dustin Lane earned his first career win as the Middle Braves head coach.

The Braves led 12-0 at the half before the Cavs finally got on the board on a long run late in the third quarter on a busted play. The HCMS defense played well all day long.

The Cavs opened the game with the ball before a big fourth down tackle by Jackson Akins set the Brave offense up deep in their own territory. Several big runs by Gray and an 81-yard drive ended in the Braves first score.

A fumble recovery by Hayden McCosh set up another short TD burst by gray before the half. Another short TD run by Gray late in the game and a 2-point conversion by Kayden “Wildman” Minix sealed the big win. Minix also had some big plays on defense.

Gray ended the first half with an interception to stop a Cavs drive.

The biggest defensive stop of the game came in the second half after a blocked punt gave the Cavs good field position in Brave territory.

The Brave defense pushed the Cavs backwards and the drive ended on another turnover fumble recovery by Bo Hazel.

Leroy Marsh led the Brave offense at quarterback and also closed out the game with a big sack on defense. Ashton Bonner played well on both sides of the ball and had an onside kick recovery on special teams.

The win was a nice revenge win for the Braves who gave up 50+ points to the Cavs in a rout just last year. It was only the second Braves win over the Cavs in middle school history.

Coach Dustin Lane was extremely pleased with the effort of his guys against the bigger squad.

“That’s a huge rivalry win for us against a team that we put a lot of emphasis on each year even though it’s not a division game we always want to win that one,” said Lane after the game. “Our defense was just stellar today against a really good team. Most of our guys play both ways and you could tell we were kind of gassed late in the game but they sucked it up and kept digging deep.”

The Middle Braves will host Mt. Zion next Thursday (5:00 PM) in the first division game of the season.
