(Franklin) — The Heard County middle school boys basketball team rallied from a 12 point halftime deficit at HCMS Thursday to knock off the Callaway Cavaliers 51-39 in the regular season opener.
Kendaz Goode led the scoring for the Braves with 16 while Connor Nutt added 13 and Emory Jones 12. Nutt drained three from outside the arc in the fourth quarter alone as the Braves made the huge comeback.
First year coach Joe Nutt was excited for his team to get the first win over the Cavs in several years. “I told the kids at halftime they needed to find some heart and go back out there and fight and that is exactly what they did,” said Nutt.
Tray Dunson had six points and the team’s overall record is now 2-2 on the young season.
The middle girls team coached by Kelly Hadley struggled after playing a very competitive first half, but ultimately fell to the Lady Cavs 48-20. Haley Bennett led the scoring for the Lady Braves.
The middle Braves teams will open division play at home Monday versus arch rival Bowdon. The girls game tips at 5:00 and will be followed immediately by the boys game.
