The Heard Middle School football team rallied from an 8-0 halftime deficit to knock off the Central of Carrollton Lions 12-8 Thursday and move to 2-0 in the West Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference standings.
The Braves stand at 1-0 in the small school division. After trailing at the half, Coach Sikes and his squad came out ready to play in the second half.
The defense shut down the Central offense and Jonta Gray scored a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to lead the offense. The Braves were unsuccessful on two 2-point conversion attempts.
“I was real happy with the way our kids came out to play in the second half. We had several guys step up,” said Coach Sikes.
The middle Braves will face a strong Bremen Blue Devil team this Thursday at home (4:30).
Carton White (#8) carries the ball early in the game versus the Lions
In other action, the JV Braves were shut down 14-0 by the Lions at the high school. A late score by the Lions sealed what had been a one score game up until that point.
The loss was the first for the Braves since the 2010 season. The JV Braves travel to Bowdon Monday for a rare Monday match-up with the Red Devils. Of note in the game, freshman Matt Brown had 16 tackles and a sack in only three quarters of play.
In softball action the Lady Braves cruised easily to a 21-0 win over Spencer in Columbus.
The Lady Braves will be competing in the Carrollton Trojan tournament this weekend in Carrollton. They will battle McIntosh, Alexander, South Paulding, Rockmart, and Paulding County.
