Moreland breaks school record at region finals

(Columbus, GA) — Senior Lady Brave cross country athlete Holly Moreland scored a strong second place finish at the Region 5-AA Cross Country finals yesterday morning at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus to earn her third consecutive trip to the GHSA Cross-Country State Championships.

A personal best time and heard County High School record of 21:16.01 put Moreland just behind first place finisher and Region Champion Devarier Robinson of Jordan who finished with a time of 21:06:14.

Junior Lady Brave Avery Barnes finished in 16th place with a time of 28:10:01.

In the male competition, junior Braves Gage Cannon and Garrett Callahan were the strongest finishers. Cannon took 18th place with a time of 19:30:62 and Callahan came in 20th place at 19:40:36.

Senior Eli Fairbanks ran a time of 22:48:92 and first year competitor junior Duncan Googe finished the race in 23:07:39.

Head coaches Cynthia O’Reilly and Lindsay Stewart were proud of their team’s efforts this season.

“Coach Stewart and I are very proud of each athlete’s progress over the season.  At each meet they improved, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have coached them,” said O’Reilly. “We will be sad to lose our two seniors, Holly Moreland and Eli Fairbanks — but we are looking forward to seeing them perform in their other sports, track and wrestling.”

Holly Moreland will compete at 8:45 AM next Saturday at Carrollton High School in the GHSA Class AA State Championships. All classifications male and female will be competing at Carrollton High Friday and Saturday.
