Mr. Edward “Ed” Gerard Murphy

Mr. Edward “Ed” Gerard Murphy, 78 of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Pine Knoll Nursing Home.

Ed Murphy served as Head Basketball Coach at The University of West Georgia from 1993-2007, and as Athletic Director from 1994-2009.

With 399 victories, Coach Murphy secured the most wins in Gulf South Conference history.

He also served as head coach at Ole Miss, Delta State, and West Alabama, and was an assistant coach at Wichita State and New Mexico State during his long and successful career.

A proud Irishman, many knew Coach for his charm, humor, and excellent story-telling. His lively spirit could fill the room, and he brought mirth and warmth to all who knew him.

Coach was also an avid gardener, a hobby he shared with his late wife Shelly Murphy, who passed away in 2015. They were both very active in the local community.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his children and their spouses, Laurie C. Murphy (Dr. Matthew C. Kadlec) of Olympia, WA; Dr. Sean M. Murphy (Kristen Mangum Murphy) of Winston-Salem, NC; and Bryan E. Murphy (Morgan Mileham Murphy) of Carrollton, GA; and grandchildren, Connor Kadlec, Grant Kadlec and Claire Kadlec of Olympia, WA, and Eamon Murphy and Brendan Murphy of Winston-Salem, NC. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, John Murphy.

The family will host a Wake for Mr. Murphy at the Irish Bred Pub in Carrollton on February 23, 2020 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30am Monday, February 24, 2020 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Monsignor Jaime Barona officiating.

Interment will immediately follow in Our Lady’s Memorial Gardens.

Mike Cooney, Bobby Cremins, Tony Andre, and Rob Evans will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Murphy may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 210 Old Center Point Road, Carrollton, GA 30117.
