Mr. Emory William Sumner, Jr.

A SumnerMr. Emory William Sumner, Jr., age 86, of Whitesburg, Georgia passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at his residence.

He was born on January 20, 1930 in Menlo, Georgia, the son of the late Emory William Sumner and the late Maude Upthegrove Haney.

He was retired from Cobb Industrial Company with over fifteen years of service and had also worked for Exposition Cotton Mill. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Whitesburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Holcomb Sumner and a brother, Benjamin Summers.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law: Glenn Scott Sumner and wife Theresa of Whitesburg, Michael Steven Sumner and wife Wanda Kay also of Whitesburg, and Robert Shannon Sumner and wife Cindy of Franklin; daughter and son-in-law: Sharon Sumner Pate and husband Steve of Whitesburg; sister, Betty Watkins of Indiana; brothers: Robert Charles “Bob” Sumner of Winston, and Edward Sumner; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Lester officiating.

Those serving as pallbearers will be Shannon Sumner, Steve Sumner, Scott Sumner, Steve Pate, Aaron Sumner, Andrew Sumner, Dathan Sumner and Terry Hardy.

Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens with American Legion Post #143 in charge of the flag presentation.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.martin-hightower.com.
